History
How We Got Here
- Faculty at MSU began publishing on topics related to the discipline in 1898, and the first course was offered in 1906.
- Agricultural Economics faculty initially worked in a section of the Economics Department.
- In 1949 the standalone Department of Agricultural Economics (AEC) was formed through the joining of faculty from the Economics Department section with those in the Farm Management Unit in the College of Agriculture.
- In 2008 the AEC Department modified its name to the present form, Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE) to more fully reflect the breadth of topics addressed in its work.
