About the MSU Beef Center

Beef cattle have been a sustaining part of Michigan State University’s (MSU) mission of teaching, research, and extension, since shortly after Michigan Agricultural College was chartered in 1855. The MSU Beef Center currently operates on approximately 300 acres of the south campus. The Center’s livestock consists of a purebred Angus herd, a crossbred Angus-Simmental cow/calf herd, and beef finishing operation. The Beef Center is heavily involved in teaching and research, yet the animals, facilities, and practices largely reflect those typical of Michigan beef farms. The Center is one of few farms in Michigan that have three segments of the beef supply chain in one location (seedstock, cow/calf, and feedlot).

Visitors will have a chance to learn what modern beef production is all about, including management aspects such as transportation, nutrition, grazing, reproduction, genetics, and even pick up tips on how to choose the best cuts of beef at the meat counter.

MSU Beef Center staff are excited to open the farm and share their work with the larger Lansing community during the September 15 Breakfast on the Farm.
