Course Description

Urban and community forests provide a myriad of benefits to the communities in which we live – from stormwater run-off and reduced energy use to improved public safety and human health. Successfully managing urban and community forests requires the integration of biological, economic and social considerations. This course is intended to introduce students to biological, physical, administrative, managerial, legal and social concepts unique to managing urban and community forests.

 

Learning Objectives

1. Understand roles and contexts of urban forests and urban and community forestry

2. Be able to describe social, environmental, and health benefits of urban and community forests

3. Become familiar with approaches for evaluating the economic and physical value of urban trees and forests

4. Develop an understanding of the administrative process and organizational structure associated with the management of urban forests

5. Develop professional skills in communication and community involvement in the successful implementation of an urban forestry program

6. Be able to assess ecosystem services of urban trees using i-Tree software

7. Be able to critically examine scientific and technical resources available to urban foresters

8. Apply theoretical and scientific urban forestry concepts to the development of practical strategies for local urban forest management
