Course Description
This Lab with the concurrent (HRT 222) will provide hands-on experience in greenhouse houseplant production and interiorscape design, maintenance, and management. Students will learn propagation techniques, crop scheduling, and the production and maintenance considerations for many major categories of houseplants, including: ferns, bromeliads and other epiphytes, succulents, cacti, foliage plants, and orchids. Identification of common houseplant species will also be required. Students will also explore interiorscape management, which is the design, installation, and maintenance of houseplants in residential and commercial settings.
Course Objectives
- Identify common houseplants.
- Apply environmental control variables (light, temperature, water, and nutrients) to production and management.
- Compare and contrast propagations techniques.
- Identify common pests and diseases, and implement appropriate pest treatment plans.
- Design an interiorscape.
- Demonstrate proper care and maintenance techniques for interiorscapes.
