About Us

The Crime Prevention through Environmental Design program, established in 2020, promotes safe environments through research, trainings, and assessment.  We employ an evidence-based research model in understanding the relationship between crime and the built environment.  Faculty and students from the School of Planning, Design and Construction and across campus participate in research, assessments, and publications.

Mission

The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a program within the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University that is engaged in research, assessments, and trainings.  Program principles are based on CPTED, a philosophy empowering citizen responsibility in measures to enhance quality of life in their neighborhoods, create safer environments for all, revitalize businesses, and create economic development opportunities.

Purpose

The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Program educates and trains graduate students, planners, professionals, developers, landlords, business owners, and law enforcement on principles of placemaking and crime prevention techniques using a participatory research approach through certification programs.
