Education Abroad Programs
CANR has a diverse Education Abroad portfolio, offering 15 faculty-led programs, and exchange or direct enroll opportunities with 12 international partner institutions. In 2019-20, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on student mobility: CANR student participation in education abroad programming was approximately 30% of the typical participation rate, largely due to the cancellation of all summer programs. This trend is likely to continue into 2020-21 as no CANR education abroad programs will be offered in spring or summer 2021.
Looking forward to 2021-22, faculty leaders have agreed, in principle, to offer their programs. CANR’s longest standing exchange partner—the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) in Northern Ireland—has implemented plans to resume joint programming as soon as feasible. CAFRE is an integral part of CANR’s Education Abroad portfolio: approximately 6-8 students are exchanged between the institutions during fall/spring semesters, and 4-8 MSU students participate each year in the CAFRE Summer Experiential exchange. The summer program offers hands-on farm and agriculture experience, especially for students in CANR’s Institute of Agricultural Technology. Additionally, CAFRE hosts approximately 20-25 CANR students in May and June, in conjunction with two faculty-led education abroad programs.
