The Amien and Florence Carter Trial Garden was established in 1978 in response to a request made by the prominent seed testing organization All-American Selections, and other professional seed producers, who began a network of trial gardens throughout the United States. Lowell Ewart was the first to care for the Trial Gardens at MSU. The trial gardens assist seed companies in determining positive or negative characteristics of new varieties and their overall performance throughout the course of the growing season.
Our goals are:
- To grow and evaluate hundreds of new varieties each year including annuals, perennials, and vegetables
- To determine how these plants perform in our mid-Michigan growing conditions
- Inspire the gardening public to explore new varieties and plant combinations
- To educate the horticulture industry and our garden visitors about our findings and recommendations
