Hiring Information

The Huron-Manistee National Forest may be filling temporary positions for fire season 2026. Openings may be available for GW-3 (entry level), GW-4 (6 months experience), GW-5 (senior firefighter) and WG-5 (equipment). GW pay rates can be found here: Pay & Leave : Salaries & Wages - OPM.gov and WG pay rates here: Benefits, Wage, NAF (osd.mil) These temporary positions have a maximum six (6) month work schedule. The anticipated employment period for these positions is March –September 2026. The Fire and Aviation program includes Engine Crews, Dozers, and a Wildland Fire Module (WFM). Our firefighters respond to 60 – 150 wildfires a year locally while working closely with MI DNR and Fire Department partners. We have an active prescribed fire program and support the national fire effort, mobilizing firefighters and equipment across the country.
