The beautiful grounds and gardens of our campus have been inspiring and delighting guests for generations. Our Facilities team has an opportunity for an experienced professional to lead our grounds and modern garage operations. The Grounds & Garage Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating facility grounds and modern garage operations for a twenty-four hour, seven-day operation. In this critical role, you will also facilitate coaching, mentoring, directing, and training in a union environment to ensure visitors, staff and students experience a clean, well-kept, comfortable, and safe environment.
Essential Responsibilities
• Manages, coaches, leads, mentors, trains, hires and disciplines union and non-union personnel affiliated with Grounds and Garage staff engaged in maintaining the Museum and Village facilities and property.
• Inspects grounds, equipment, and staffing to determine need and extent of service, equipment, required to perform routine maintenance.
• In cooperation with senior management, requests, interviews, hires, trains, and disciplines staff as appropriate.
• Assists in scheduling, overseeing staff, and coordinating with other departments involved in maintenance and building repairs.
• Monitors shop equipment in garages, vehicle fleet for condition, routine maintenance, basic safety, state and government compliance to ensure safe operation of union and non-union shops.
• Purchases and monitors maintenance and grounds supplies, equipment and miscellaneous items as necessary.
• Coordinates all staff assignments for maintenance and grounds repair and/or renovation.
• Maintains budgets for Facilities Grounds and modern Garage.
• Performs other duties and activities, as necessary.
• Contributes to the effective team management and leadership to assist in solving problems, issues and opportunities within Facilities Operations.
• Acts as a team player and provides experience within Facilities unit and with other teams as needed.
• Demonstrated leader in green practices and sustainability efforts for the grounds and modern garage units.
Your Qualifications
• 3 or more years of management experience
• 2 or more years of facilities and/or grounds experience
• Valid Michigan driver’s license
• Proficient with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills
• Experience managing union workers preferred
• Formal Turf Management or Horticulture education preferred
• Knowledge of all facets of construction trades and disciplines
• Strong communication & interpersonal skills
• High level of integrity, trust & confidentiality
• Ability to interpret, analyze and problem-solve in stressful situations
Indoor environment includes dust, dirt, loud noise, chemical process fumes, and temperature extremes. Many tasks are performed outdoors in all seasons and all weather. Frequent standing, walking, as well as lifting, carrying, and pushing, up to 100 lbs.
