Position Title:
Horticulturist
Job Summary:
Horticulturist: Installs, cultivates, and maintains ornamental flowers, shrubs, and trees in our clients’ properties. Performs work in accordance with our standards and procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Conditions and prepares soils in planting beds prior to the installation of plant materials such as bulbs, annuals, perennials, or small shrubs.
- Reads blueprints, prepares planting bed layout, and installs plant materials according to plans.
- Applies fertilizers or pesticides as directed.
- Transplants and/or divides plant materials from display beds when required.
- Attends to display beds to maintain peak health of plants and display appeal.
- Cultivates soil. Waters, weeds, transplants, fertilizes, or thins out plant material in planting beds as directed.
- Hand prunes or shears woody plant materials to maintain design intent of display gardens.
- Operates all mechanized equipment consistent with the maintenance of grounds.
- Drives any and all Fitzgerald Landscaping supplied vehicles.
- Maintains and repairs gardening hand tools and equipment.
- Assists in directing the work of our summer employees.
- Helps introduce new employees to shop protocol, procedures and Fitzgerald Landscaping applications and equipment.
- Requisitions materials and supplies using in-house procedures as needed. Keeps working area safe and clean.
- Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment.
- Uses computers to enter and access job related information.
- Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary by the company.
- Performs related job duties as may be assigned.
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Education:
- Associate's degree in ornamental horticulture preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of three years related experience in ornamental horticulture, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
- Completion of job-related apprenticeship program.
- Advanced job-related training programs.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Current valid driver's license, other licenses or certificates needed for this position as required by law.
- Must possess a Colorado Pesticide Operator’s license or be able to obtain one within six months of employment.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to access computer programs and use or learn basic computer operations related to position requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position.
- Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend and work in a kneeling position for periods of time.
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of working at heights as required.
- Must be able to enter and work within tight spaces and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures.
