LIVING IN STILLWATER

What makes Karsten different is the combination of the property, the turf and the logistics behind the operation. We manage approximately 1,400 acres, including 007XL and 777 creeping bentgrass greens, more than 86 acres of Tahoma 31 bermudagrass fairways, RTF tall fescue and over 60 acres of native grass.

All of those surfaces are intertwined across one property, yet each responds differently to Oklahoma’s heat, wind, cold and rapidly changing weather. Interns learn that managing Karsten is not simply about growing grass. It requires coordinating people, equipment, water and applications across a large operation while still producing consistent playing conditions each day.

Students will participate in daily course conditioning, irrigation troubleshooting, chemical applications, calibration and the math behind those applications. They will also gain exposure to GPS mapping,  Drone Spraying, GPS Fairway sprayers, USGA performance testing, geothermal heating and cooling, PrecisionAire systems and educational sessions led by vendors and industry professionals.

Intern projects are also an important part of the experience. Previous projects have included soils and fertility, GPS and area mapping, native-grass management, wetting agents tests and employee training videos. These are not intended to be simple classroom assignments. Each project should address a real need and require the student to manage it alongside daily responsibilities and develop on in the future. The life of a superintendent does not always fit neatly between 5:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The projects are designed to stretch interns and help them learn how to manage their time, prioritize responsibilities, delegate work and direct their effort where it matters most—just as a superintendent must do.

We are honest that the internship involves early mornings, shared weekend responsibilities, and hard work. At the same time, interns receive scheduled time away from the course. We are not recruiting students simply to fill positions. We want them involved in the decisions, calculations and conversations that explain why the work is being done and then hopefully return into our  “farm system”.


More Than a Summer Job
Stillwater is a university town roughly an hour from Tulsa and Oklahoma City, with access to lakes, fishing, public hunting areas, archery and gun ranges. Housing may be available for summer, six month and winter opportunities.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Work with purpose. Build efficiency, follow the right sequence and understand the reasoning behind each step.
Applied agronomy. Learn spraying, calibration and chemical programs through fieldwork, discussion and focused homework. Technology in practice. Use GPS mapping, irrigation controls, geothermal hydronics
and field data to support daily course decisions.
