Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.


STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking a service member with an interest in historic preservation, landscape architecture, and/or horticulture to be part of the National Cemetery Investment Initiative team. The National Cemetery Investment Initiative is a multi-year plan to preserve and protect the 14 national cemeteries managed by the National Park Service.

 
This member will assist with the creation of Preservation Maintenance Plans for national cemeteries dating from the Civil War and Battle of the Little Bighorn. The member will primarily be responsible for graphic layout using InDesign. In addition, member will assist with technical writing, mapping, and editing based on your skillset. On the job training will be provided in cultural landscape management and National Park Service operations.

 

Description of Duties:

  • The member will work to assist the Park Cultural Landscapes Program with the creation of Preservation Maintenance Plans for up to 8 national cemeteries
  • Graphic layout of Preservation Maintenance Plans in InDesign: Help layout up to 8 200+ page documents using Adobe InDesign.
  • Research and Writing: Conduct research on park resources and write descriptions of resources using technical language.
  • Editing: Provide type and content editing of up to 8 200+ page documents.
  • Map Production using ArcGIS Pro: If skilled in GIS member may assist with map production detailing national cemetery historic features

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214.
  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Horticulture, or related field. 
  • Knowledge and experience in Adobe InDesign.
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Technical writing and editing skills.
  • ArcGIS Pro experience preferred but not required.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
  • Members must be available to serve full-time for the entirety of the 52-week term.
  • Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term. 

 

Orientation and Training:

  • Members will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Training and Mentorship in NPS operations, historic preservation, and cultural landscape management.
  • Opportunities to attend NPS Preservation Horticulture training or Historic Preservation Fundamentals Training.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
