PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Reporting to the owner, the Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of business production, providing hands-on leadership with maintenance of clients’ gardens, special projects, and installations. This includes managing the productivity of the teams, acting as the main contact for gardening customers, conducting gardening sales, setting up new projects, and managing the scheduling and logistics of gardening accounts. The OM will advise/assist the owner in hiring, performance appraisal, promotion, and disciplinary actions as a supervisor of the gardening crews.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sets schedules for gardening visits and projects; sets crew assignments; notifies clients of upcoming visits
  • Manages projects, helps crew leaders in reading and implementing proposals and designs, anticipates logistics of jobs such as pulling permits, marking utilities, coordinate logistics, materials, equipment, and tools
  • Manages gardening staff as a supervisor, contributes to hiring process, makes performance assessments, liaises with owner regarding personnel actions, enforces and develops business policies
  • Guides and works alongside crews in effectively and efficiently maintaining gardens guided by proper horticultural practices
  • Serves as primary point of contact for clients of gardening accounts, conduct regular client meetings, anticipate needs, drive quality assurance and ensure requests are met
  • Fulfills the sales role for gardening clients, growing business through both new and organic sales
  • Plans and conducts various training programs including new employee orientation
  • Organizes winter planning and setup for following season, including preparation of equipment, tools, materials
  • Partners with owner on multiple facets of business operation, including ensuring achievement of financial targets
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma; Associates degree in Horticulture or related field preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in ornamental gardening, landscape, or related work experience, 1 year in a supervisory capacity

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & ATTITUDE

  • Strong knowledge of horticulture – can identify plants, soil types, weeds, and pests and match to gardening maintenance requirements
  • Good understanding of design and landscape installation techniques, proper pruning techniques, planting, perennial, and annual care, understanding of irrigation and lighting systems operation and maintenance
  • Exhibits a take-charge attitude and self-starting behavior
  • Capable of analyzing basic data such as job scope, budget, invoicing, and other administrative data
  • Ability to operate power tools and large equipment including tractors, loaders, and
  • Demonstrate leadership, effective communication, confidentiality, professional work relationships; track record in successfully guiding a team to complete a project on time and under budget
  • Computer skills encompassing the use of customer management software via smart phone app
  • Ability to lift 55 pounds on a regular basis; work outside for long periods of time in unfavorable conditions; perform strenuous manual labor requiring considerable walking, lifting, reaching, climbing, stooping, pushing, pulling and carrying; available weekends and evenings as needed
