Job Description
OPERATIONS MANAGER
Overview:
The Operations Manager is responsible for managing field operations within their specific branch, and to coordinate work with and between the other branch offices. The daily duties include management of: field personnel, equipment, work schedules, budgets and facilities - to maintain the standards that are consistent with the Professional Group’s core values. This also includes the evaluation of talent within the branch to determine that the best personnel are performing in the correct roles.
Additionally, Operations Managers directly oversee any Assistant Managers if the branch has one, evaluating their managerial skills and working toward furthering those skills. This includes, but is not limited to: summer & winter operations management, time management, personnel and crew management, computer skills, estimating proficiency, customer interaction and sales abilities. The GS3’s should be trained to a level that, in the absence of the Operations Manager, there is virtually no loss of productivity and focus within the branch.
Lastly, as a way to increase market share and increase profitability within the organization, Operations Managers have the ability and responsibility to help drive the sales effort. On a “global” level, Operations Managers have the responsibility to communicate with the Account Managers when an opportunity arises or a change occurs on properties that can lead to increased sales for the Account Manager on large scale projects and accounts. On the “local” level, Operations Managers have the opportunity and responsibility to identify sales opportunities, and pursue those opportunities toward the sale of landscape maintenance and enhancement services. These opportunities must be communicated with the Account Managers and Director of Operations to insure a consistent and coordinated effort that avoids duplication of efforts.
Specific Operational Responsibilities (approx. 95% of duties):
1. Managing the daily assignments of the branch staff.
2. Ensuring that work is performed in the most productive manner to meet specified budgets.
3. Ensuring that job sites meet the criteria of the contract and company standards.
4. Ensuring that company safety rules are followed and promoted regularly.
5. Ensuring that all required paperwork is completed and submitted on time.
6. Ensuring that trucks, trailers, and equipment are maintained to company standards.
7. Effectively communicating with upper management, peers, assistants, clients, and vendors as required to effectively and efficiently complete the jobs.
8. Holding regular formal, informational and motivational meetings with subordinates.
9. Conducts himself/herself in a professional manner at all times that reflects the values of the company.
10. Acts as the leader in promoting timeliness, productivity and quality throughout all operations and within the branch.
11. Continually assessing operational procedures and making recommendations to enhance value or improve efficiency and sharing those insights to further the goals of the company.
12. Continually developing personal professional skills and knowledge.
13. Meeting company standards regarding presentation of self.
14. Abide by and enforce company policies and procedures
15. Making and keeping customers satisfied
16. Ensuring that job budgets and profitability targets are consistently met.
Specific Sales Responsibilities (approx. 5% of duties):
1. Communicate with the Account Managers when an opportunity arises or a change occurs on properties that can lead to increased sales for the Account Manager on large scale projects and accounts.
2. Identify sales opportunities, and pursue those opportunities toward the sale of landscape maintenance and enhancement services. This includes developing written proposals and pricing, customer contact and account management. Operations Managers will be compensated for these sales based on the profitability of the sale, pursuant to company guidelines.
3. Assist with the measurement and estimating of new and existing properties.
Level I Qualifications:
• Combination of education and work experience indicating a minimum capacity to manage employees and maintain relationships with clients and vendors.
• Ability to manage 4-6 grounds care crews.
Level II Qualifications:
• Level I Qualifications.
• Three years of management experience in the green industry.
• Ability to manage 6-8 grounds care crews.
Level III Qualifications:
• Level II Qualifications.
• Five years of supervisory experience in the green industry.
• Combination of education and work experience indicating a capacity to advance to a Regional Manager position.
Minimum Qualifications for all Field Employees:
1. Ability to pass Federal eligibility requirements.
2. Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
3. Have own transportation to and from job.
4. Ability to walk and remain on feet for most of workday.
5. Ability to lift and carry eighty (80) pounds.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for all Operations Managers:
1. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
2. Possession of a Michigan Chauffeur’s license.
3. Valid Medical Examiners Certificate (Medical Card)
4. Insurance company approval of driving record.
5. Ability to speak, read, and write English.
6. Possession of a Michigan Pesticide applicator’s license (categories 3a, 3b & 6).
7. Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
8. Strong customer service and employee focus.
9. Basic computer knowledge including Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
10. Ability to pass a drug test.
