Undergraduate Research Opportunity
MSU Fruit Tree Development Lab | Department of Horticulture
The MSU Fruit Tree Development Lab, run by Dr. Courtney Hollender, is seeking a scientifically curious and reliable undergraduate student to assist with various lab and field research projects. Their main role will be to carry out an independent research project to characterize root and shoot architecture in Arabidopsis thaliana plants containing mutations in genes involved plant shape. This student will also assist with an off-site field study on apple fruit development. Additional responsibilities include greenhouse watering, miscellaneous field work, and occasional dishwashing.
This is an excellent opportunity for students that love plants and are considering graduate school. The student will learn about tree fruit production, basic molecular biology techniques (i.e. DNA extractions, PCR, gel electrophoresis), sterile technique, image analysis, and statistics. Research results could be presented at an undergraduate research symposium and may be included in a publication.
No prior research experience is required, but basic genetics knowledge is desired. Attention to detail, good organization skills are a must. A valid driver’s license is needed if continuing over the summer.
