Job Summary:
The Assistant Grower plays a crucial role in supporting the successful cultivation of plants within the greenhouse/horticulture industry. This position primarily focuses on assisting with plant care, pest management, and overall greenhouse operations. The Assistant Grower ensures the health and quality of plants while maintaining a clean and organized environment. We are a seasonal grower, so while the assistant grower position as described below will be the focus, there will be about 5 months of limited growing mixed with off season tasks such as: greenhouse construction, water and gas line installation and maintenance, retail stocking, retail deliveries to outlet stores, changing poly on greenhouses, fall jobs including picking pumpkins, cornstalks, and mums.
Responsibilities:
Plant Care:
- Assist in watering and fertilizing plants following established guidelines.
- Monitor and adjust environmental conditions (humidity, temperature, light) to optimize plant growth using Qcom Environmental Controls.
- Identify and address nutrient deficiencies or signs of stress promptly.
Pest Management
- Monitor plants for signs of pests and diseases, promptly reporting any issues to the head grower.
- Implement integrated pest management (IPM) techniques, including applying biological controls and approved pesticides when necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of pest management activities and their outcomes.
Attention to Detail
- Ensure plants receive proper care by meticulously following care instructions and schedules, including applications of growth regulators to maintain height and encourage branching and a strong plant.
- Regularly inspect plants for irregularities, ensuring early detection of any problems.
- Maintain accurate records of plant growth, health, and any treatments applied.
Greenhouse Operations
- Collaborate with head grower and general manager to execute planting schedules, ensuring timely and efficient operations.
- Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the greenhouse, equipment, and growing areas.
Punctuality and Reliability
- Arrive punctually for scheduled shifts to ensure consistent coverage and smooth operations.
- Assist in opening and closing procedures as required, ensuring the facility is secure.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with head grower and team members, reporting any issues or observations promptly.
- Collaborate with the head grower and general manager to implement changes in cultivation practices or procedures to work more efficiently.
Learning and Development
- Stay up to date with the latest horticultural techniques, industry best practices, and new plant varieties.
- Seek opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge through workshops, seminars, or training sessions.
Ability to Follow Orders
- Work under the guidance of the head grower, following instructions for tasks and projects.
- Execute tasks efficiently and accurately based on provided guidelines.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in greenhouse/horticulture industry preferred but not required.
- Basic understanding of plant care, pest management, and greenhouse operations.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established protocols.
- Excellent punctuality and reliability.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate within a team.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and bending.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and practices.
Work Environment
- The work environment includes exposure to various weather conditions and physical demands associated with greenhouse operations.
- The Assistant Grower may also work with pesticides and fertilizers, requiring adherence to safety protocols.
