Urban forests provide an important role in helping communities adapt to climate change, but also are vulnerable to changes in climate. Leslie will share how urban trees can be evaluated for their vulnerability, focusing on a recent assessment completed for Detroit. Dave will present data from both past and recent studies to discuss the potential for trees in urban areas to uptake carbon and provide shade as means of influencing climate.

- Dave MacFarlane, Professor of Forest Measurements and Modeling, Michigan State University
- Leslie Brandt is a climate change specialist with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science and the U.S. Forest Service, where she works on climate change adaptation and outreach for natural resource managers. Her areas of focus include urban forestry, Central Hardwoods Forests, and recreation. She has a PhD in Ecology (University of Minnesota) and a BA in Biology (Gustavus Adolphus College).
