The Carbon Footprint of a Large Global Forest Owner: A Case Study for Rayonier, Inc.

- Climate change caused by rising greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is an existential threat currently facing society. The ability of trees to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in biomass is one of the most important ecosystem services provided by forest ecosystems. This enables forests to serve as natural climate solutions. Carbon sequestration by forests offsets approximately 16% of the total CO2 emissions in the U.S. each year. As part of its commitment to sustainable forest management and transparency, Rayonier tracks and reports on its carbon footprint annually (www.rayonier.com/sustainability). This includes the total carbon stored in forest ecosystem (trees, understory, forest floor and soil), the carbon sequestered each year in the forest, the carbon removed in timber harvests, and scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. We also examine the downstream impacts of carbon stored in harvested wood products. This presentation will summarize Rayonier’s carbon footprint including a discussion of the methods used and the results from the U.S. and New Zealand forestry activities.
