Survival Camp: Day 3
Duck!
Not an exclamation, we actually have ducks! Today some of our campers got to visit the ducks that we keep on the farm, they provide us with eggs that we got to collect today! The duck area is actually within the sheep pen, so we also said hello to our fluffy sheep to and from the ducks. The campers learned about how to tell the difference between male and female ducks which is that the males are always more colorful, as well as slightly puffier. We also talked about the difference between eggs, while also giving the ducks some pats.
Shelters
The idea is in place, the location has been chosen, we've already started building! Today we continued building and refining. Some groups also had their tarp thrown over their structures, but there was still a lot of work to be done. The forest is a maze of plants all over, save the concrete path that's been poured. Because of this we went over the different kinds of plants we see on the forest floor such as poison ivy: "Leaves of three, leave 'em be!".
Pita & Stew
Today's Garden Kitchen Recipes didn't require much preparatory help from the campers, since all the food took quite a while to cook! They still talked about what went into each dish, and how the ingredients might blend after being cooked. We had a lovely baked Garlic Parmesan Pita Bread in the morning, and a heart Three Sisters Stew (Squash, Beans, Corn) that was just perfect for the afternoon weather, just in time to warm us up before the rain came!
Survival Maze
A fun activity that we do with our campers indoors, where we have a giant grid taped on the ground. It is a teamwork-based guessing game where all the campers get to guess, 'which squares of the tape grid come together to make a path through'? It was so great to see how the campers helped their teammate out when it was their turn, to find the path and win the game!
Archery
Because this activity requires a lot of safety rules and an age limit, we separated the younger age group to play some rounds of cornhole, where we toss a beanbag into a hole cut into a wooden pallet. The team with the most beanbag tosses in the hole wins! Meanwhile our budding archers took to practice in the forest, learning how to properly use the bow and arrow, trying to hit the center or each target.
Slack-Line
A slack-line is essentially a tightrope that you put really close to the ground, with an extra line at elbow-level to aid in balancing. We also had people on either side to help support the camper with walking across. Each camper got to take a couple turns with the slack-line, and participating in group encouragement to make the slack-line walker feel more comfortable.
S'mores
Today we made our infamous Solar S'mores! What is involved in making this? A giant marshmallow, chocolate, and a graham cracker inside a carboard box, on a black paper to absorb light, the top covered in plastic wrap, and a flap of carboard covered in foil to redirect the sunlight into the box. Using all these elements, we made some wonderfully warm s'mores that made the perfect afternoon snack
