2022 Survival Camp: Day 4
Canoes, Fires, & Potatoes
2022 Survival Camp: Day 4
Can You Canoe?
I know I can canoe! So did our campers, jumping right into the boats and paddling of as fast as they could. Before doing so, we went over safety rules, since it we are letting the campers go out into water, how to wear the life vests, and more so they stayed safe while having fun. Lots and lots of splashy fun was had, and then at the end, there was the Big Canoe Race back to the loading dock to end the canoeing activity for the day!
Potatoes!
Coming in second place right after the canoes, was our exciting potato harvest in the Community Service Agriculture (C.S.A.) field. The campers learned about which part of the potato plant we harvest, as well as what parts of the potato we don't need. After turning over the soil, the campers got to take crates and pic up the biggest potatoes ever! Some of them were almost as large as a camper's face! The campers really helped CSA quite a bit, since the field is actually really big, and every pair of hands helps!
Chickens!
There are so many eggs that we can collect on a daily basis, that it is an everyday chore that the campers love to do, since we get to interact with the chickens! Every day the chickens come out to see who's there and what will happen, even though they don't like us collecting the eggs, they are very used to people coming into the chicken coup. Our Tollgate Farm Roosters like to circle around and keep watch of all the campers, and lots and lots of crowing is heard every single day!
Apples and Bark
Not just apples, by themselves, but apples with sun butter, which was a really fun snack in the morning, the campers got to spread sun butter on their apples, or dip, and it was a great refresher for the hot morning. After that snack was finished, we had the campers help prepare the afternoon snack, A Yogurt Granola Bark, since it would take a long time to freeze. By the time the campers came back for their afternoon snack, Yogurt had frozen enough to the point that it was the perfectly chilly snack to cool off after a hot day.
Shelters
One of our last days building the shelters before testing them, the campers spent a long while talking with one another, discussing strategies about how they can best continue building their structures. This is such a great teamworking activity that touches on the first letters of our CARES, good cooperation and attitudes all around!
Filter Challenge
This was another water activity that talked about how one can filter water using only natural materials found in your surroundings. We used grass, dirt, coffee filters, and even cotton balls to filter down our pond water that we poured from a jug into the filter, that poured into a clean jar below. We found out that the water gets filtered from all the dirt and large contaminants, but not so much the bacteria, and we discussed a lot about how to clean the water after filtering.
Fire Building
This was arguable the most difficult activity, since we had to make a fire one of three ways: Using a magnifying glass, flint and steel, as well as sparking magnesium. It was quite difficult, since the fires kept starting and then fizzling out, so we spent quite some time discussing what a fire needs to keep on burning for long periods of time.
