A. Pouyan Nejadhashemi Named Fellow of the International Environmental Modelling and Software Society

Michigan State University professor recognized for sustained leadership and contributions to environmental modelling and software

Amirpouyan “A. Pouyan” Nejadhashemi, University Research Foundation Distinguished Professor and director of both the Institute of Water Research and the Center for Intelligent Water Resources Engineering at Michigan State University, has been named a Fellow of the International Environmental Modelling and Software Society, or iEMSs.

Nejadhashemi was selected as one of three members of the 2025 class of iEMSs Fellows and was formally recognized during the 13th International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software, held July 12–16, 2026, at University College Dublin in Ireland. The fellowship recognizes his dedication to advancing the Society’s mission and his outstanding contributions to environmental modelling and software.

In announcing the fellowship, iEMSs highlighted Nejadhashemi’s extensive leadership and service to the international environmental modelling community. He chaired the 2024 iEMSs Congress in East Lansing, Michigan, helping bring the global conference together under challenging circumstances. He has also served as an iEMSs Board member since 2018, contributed to previous conference organizing committees, served for several years as a stream co-lead, and supported the Society’s scholarly mission through his editorial leadership with Environmental Modelling & Software.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized as an iEMSs Fellow,” Nejadhashemi said. “The Society has provided an exceptional international community for advancing environmental modelling and software, building collaborations, and supporting the next generation of researchers. I am grateful to my students, colleagues, collaborators, and the entire iEMSs community, whose collective efforts made this recognition possible.”

At MSU, Nejadhashemi leads interdisciplinary research focused on water resources management, watershed and water-quality modelling, climate resilience, artificial intelligence, optimization, and environmental decision-support systems. His professional record includes 174 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, along with the successful graduation of 31 master’s and doctoral students under his major advisership.

This distinction builds upon several recent honors, including the American Water Resources Association Honorary Member Award, the Rudolph Hering Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Environmental and Water Resources Institute, the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Established Researcher Award, and the MSU Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award.
