The Landscape Architecture Alumni Advisory Board and LA faculty are joining together to create a Distinguished Speaker Series to celebrate and share the impact of LA’s across Michigan and the world.
Enrichment funds from the School have made piloting this series possible. The LAAAB’s extensive network of professionals provides a unique opportunity to attract national and internationally recognized speakers to the MSU campus. The events will be a great opportunity for students, professionals and the broader community to engage in meaningful dialogue about the built and natural environment.
In past years, the Sigma Lambda Alpha Honor Society honors the MSU LA Distinguished Alumni at their annual induction dinner in the spring and the LA club hosts a graphic workshop biennially in the fall. With the added support of the LAAAB, the program will be expanded to four speakers/events annually. The speakers and events for the 2013 academic year include the following:
Spring Semester 2013
Barbara Faga, FASLA.
April 4, 2013.
Ms. Faga has celebrated her 30-year career as an urban designer, author, and professor. She was recently named a Fellow with AECOM. Previously she was a principal with EDAW where she chaired their board of directors from 1996 to 2005. In 2007, Design Intelligence named her one of the top 15 women who are changing the world of architecture. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award in Landscape Architecture from MSU in 2001, and is planning to complete a dissertation for a PhD in public policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2013.
Fall Semester 2013
Bill Johnson, FASLA.

Mr. Johnson obtained his bachelor’s degree from MSU in 1953. He went on to complete an M.L.A. from Harvard after his military service. He formed Johnson, Johnson and Roy with his brother Carl and Clarence Roy in 1961 and amongst other accomplishments served as Dean of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan from 1975–1983. He was named a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1973 and awarded the ASLA Medal in 1986.
