Two faculty members from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) are bringing hands-on expertise to the Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, a collaboration between Apple and Michigan State University that helps small and medium-sized businesses adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. Their work supports small and medium enterprises (SME) in implementing smart manufacturing techniques that help them adopt innovative techniques for their businesses.

Supported by the Teaching Innovation Grant opportunity, Dr. Steven Gray, a professor in the Department of Community Sustainability, and Dr. Euihark Lee, an assistant professor in the School of Packaging, are teaching sessions that blend applied learning with innovative technologies.

Lee teaches Packaging Systems and AI Implementation, showing participants how data-driven testing and AI tools can enhance packaging performance, quality and sustainability. Gray’s Systems Modeling workshop teaches participatory systems modeling and expedited scenario planning (XSP), using the Mental Modeler platform to map production systems, run scenarios and adapt tools to decision-making needs. Together, they add value to the academy by showing business leaders practical strategies for navigating complex manufacturing challenges and connecting academic expertise with real-world industry applications.

While the sessions take place in Detroit, the MSU community has opportunities to get involved. During The Apple Manufacturing Academy Spring Forum, a free on-campus event at the end of April, students, faculty and SME’s will come together to explore how AI is transforming manufacturing. The Spring Forum also provides a chance to connect with peers, alumni and businesses through industry talks, keynotes and poster sessions, to learn about emerging technologies in manufacturing.

Registered participants can sign up for Day 2 off-site tours and experiences at Block Imaging, Peckham, the MSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), where each site will highlight how AI is being applied in real-world manufacturing and operational processes.

Through the Teaching Innovation Grant, Lee and Gray demonstrate CANR’s commitment to linking research, education and real-world impact — preparing the next generation of leaders in sustainable, technology-driven manufacturing.
