The Miesel Lab investigates ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry in natural and managed environments. We use field and laboratory studies to understand how fire and other disturbances affect forest carbon, and the biogeochemical factors that regulate soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Characterizing the ecological role of pyrogenic carbon is a major focus of our current work. These topics improve our understanding of ecosystem resilience to global change.
