Explore adaptive farming in action: Visit an AgrAbility client’s farm in Allegan County
Join MSU Extension staff for a visit to an AgrAbility client’s farm and see how assistive technology helps farmers overcome physical challenges and continue working in agriculture.
Doug VerHoeven, a corn and soybean farmer in Allegan County, has been farming from a wheelchair for more than 45 years. Through innovation, determination and support from the Michigan AgrAbility project he has adapted his operation with a wide range of assistive technologies to continue doing the work he loves. In 2019, Doug transformed a portion of his farm into a demonstration site, showcasing the tools and modifications that make it possible for individuals with mobility challenges to remain active and successful in agriculture.
The site features a variety of adaptive equipment, including vehicle lifts, ramps, outdoor mobility vehicles, hitching systems and other practical tools designed to simplify day-to-day farming tasks. These solutions offer powerful examples of how farms can be made more accessible for people with disabilities, arthritis, aging-related changes or other physical limitations.
If you work with farmers, especially aging growers or those dealing with physical impairments, this is a valuable opportunity to see real-life adaptations in use.
For professionals conducting site visits or working with agricultural producers in any capacity, this event offers practical insight into how to recognize needs and refer clients to available supports. The visit also offers a hands-on introduction to AgrAbility, a national program that connects farmers with disabilities to resources, technology and support systems that help them continue farming safely and independently. We will also share more information about AgrAbility farm assessments – checking for safety, secondary injury hazards and helping assure a sound quality of life while farming with a disability, injury or impairment.
