Farmers markets play a role in local economy
National Farmers Market Week recognizes value to local economy and local healthy food access.
In acknowledgement of the value farmers markets provide to the local economy and community, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently proclaimed August 5 – 11, 2012 as National Farmers Market week.
You only have to see the number of community residents that come out to sample and hunt for the most flavorful and local healthy food to be a believer in the value a farmers market can have on the local economy. Farmers markets are crucial to our local food system and provide income for our local farmers and fresh, healthy foods. On any given day of the week in Macomb County and our surrounding areas, you can find a farmers market if you are looking for the freshest produce and a great experience. Not only can you find food, you can also find arts and crafts and music at many of these markets. Go out and enjoy Michigan!
