FCCP attended the Society of American Foresters National Convention in Hartford, CT, and presented on a hybrid outreach and education program to inform forest landowner decision-making.
Hartford, CT – Forest Carbon and Climate Program director, Chad Papa, attended the Society of American Foresters (SAF) National Convention in Hartford, Connecticut on October 22nd – 25th. Dr. Papa gave an innovation zone talk titled “Discovering Forest Carbon Science and Management through Hybrid Education and Outreach” to a standing room only audience comprised of students, practitioners, and academics. The talk focused on recent FCCP efforts to build capacity among forest landowners and practitioners to further engage with the carbon economy and incorporate climate and carbon considerations into land management planning.
This year’s convention celebrated the 125th anniversary of SAF with the theme of “From Roots to Canopy: 125 Years of Forestry and
Natural Resources.” The convention brought together foresters, researchers, and policymakers, to reflect on the rich history of forestry, share current advancements, and look ahead to the future of sustainable forest management through science talks, plenaries, technical field tours, workshops, panel discussions, and social mixer events.
At the convention, FCCP also had the opportunity to reconnect with project partners, colleagues, and the broader Michigan State Forestry community through meetings, policy sessions, social events, and a Michigan State Forestry alumni reception. Furthermore, the MSU Department of Forestry and the Institute for Agriculture Technology (IAT) had a table at the exhibitor hall to promote broader education resources, including FCCP graduate certificate in forest carbon science, policy, and management, FCCP professional courses, FCCP Open Resource Library (ORL), and the department of forestry’s hybrid master’s degree.
