Dr. Chad Papa, FCCP Director, presented a talk titled “The Role of Forest Certification to Incentivize Forest Adaptation: Downscaling Regional Climate Change Impacts” at the National Adaptation Forum in Pittsburgh, PA. This talk highlighted recent efforts to bridge ‘science-practice’ gaps through knowledge synthesis, decision-making tools, and the development of operational indicators to support region-wide climate-smart forestry initiatives.

The talk was drawn from recent collaborations between FCCP and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s (SFI) Climate-Smart Forestry Initiative, which seeks to advance the interpretation and implementation of climate-smart forestry across the SFI footprint. This initiative engages a diverse network of forestry practitioners, academics, and public servants to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by identifying, developing, and implementing practices that meet the SFI Standards while achieving co-benefits for biodiversity and wildfire risk reduction.

The National Adaptation Forum is a biennial convening for adaptation professionals to innovate, network, and focus on established and emerging climate adaptation issues of the day. The Doris Duke Foundation sponsored a special session and working group on climate-smart forestry that included sessions on forest certification, reforestation, and innovative data-driven tools to support forest resilience.
