The Michigan State University Extension Field Crops Webinar Series on March 16, 2023, will focus on wildlife and mitigating the damage they can cause to our crops. Michigan is home to abundant wildlife that creates valuable opportunities for recreation and sport. Yet, when wild animals make use of farms for food and shelter, the damage they cause can be frustrating and costly. Effectively managing wildlife damage requires special attention to applicable laws/regulations, divergent perspectives on the value of wildlife, and the principles of integrated pest management. This discussion will cover the background on wildlife damage in Michigan, provide tips on identifying and diagnosing wildlife damage, a review of wildlife damage management strategies available to farmers, and highlight available educational resources.

Join James DeDecker, director of the MSU Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center; Amberly Hauger, USDA wildlife biologist; and Colter Lubben, Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife technician, to discuss how you can minimize wildlife’s effects on your farm.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Wildlife Service’s mission is federal leadership and expertise to resolve wildlife conflicts to allow people and wildlife to coexist. Wildlife services provides a variety of integrated wildlife damage management techniques to provide technical assistance and direct management operations in response to requests for assistance. This presentation will discuss who we are at USDA wildlife services, how we can help mitigate wildlife damage, guidelines on whether a federal or state permit is needed to address wildlife damage, discuss the federal depredation permit and the process of obtaining a depredation permit.

Field crop producers, consultants and agribusiness professionals are invited to participate in the Field Crops Webinar Series 2023, a series of eight online programs addressing field crop production and pest management offered by Michigan State University Extension.

The theme for this year's series is Two for the Price of One: Conversations in Row Crop Agriculture. This particular session will feature three speakers giving short presentations and discussing different aspects of the topic in an informal talk-show/podcast format with plenty of opportunity for interaction with the audience. Participants will hear how to enhance their row crop production systems in the coming season and have an opportunity to ask questions of agricultural experts.

The live webinars will run on Monday evenings from 7 to 8 p.m. beginning Feb. 6 and ending March 27, 2023. Remaining topics include the following:
