Forestry undergraduate student Sam Quinto, class of 2027, shares his experience interning for Bracell this summer.

Where are you interning this summer, and what is your position/title?

I’m interning at Bracell, a pulp and paper company located in Lencois Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil. My title is Silviculture Operations Intern.

Can you describe some of the main things you’ve been working on so far?

I'm working on a project that is assessing and evaluating weed competition on forests above 2 years old on all of Bracell’s projects/farms. I'm going to start working on a project that uses remote sensing to quantify the number of remaining logs left after harvest.

What does a typical day or week look like in your role?

I'm mostly based at the Silviculture Office, but for my project, I had to go to some farms to assess the level of intensity of weed infestation. I also participated in workshops and training sessions provided, and I have participated in a visit led by the Head of the group to which the company belongs.

What are you hoping to learn or accomplish by the end of your internship?

I'm hoping to learn as much as I can regarding silviculture operations and production strategies. However, I hope to also learn general workplace and interpersonal skills, such as teamwork and communication, which are highly valuable to have today.

Do you have a favorite moment or memory from your internship so far?

My favorite moment so far has been watching a demonstration of how the company deals with ant infestation problems in their farms by using the thermo fog extermination method.

Any advice for students looking for an internship?

Make sure to keep your options open! Sometimes you won’t get to work on what you wanted and/or are most interested in in the forestry sector, but you will still learn so much about the workplace, yourself, and lifelong lessons that you will take with you wherever you end up.
