Four tips and reminders for first time job seekers
Staying focused, positive and patient will help a new job seeker stay the course.
Getting your first job can be an exciting process! This experience can also be overwhelming to a first. Here are some tips and reminders from Michigan State University Extension as you begin the job search:
- Apply, apply, apply! Submit your resume and application to many different organizations and companies. It is important that you meet the qualifications and requirements for the position, but it is better to apply to positions and have the opportunity to decline an interview or position rather than not ever get the chance.
- It takes a lot of work and time to get a job. You will need to create a resume, complete applications online or on paper, research job postings and submit your materials, practice interviewing, and actually go to the job interviews. Your primary focus or “job” right now is to find a job. You are building skills, learning about yourself and improving your ability to get a great job when the opportunity arises.
- Know that organizations and companies are also recruiting you. In the end, you have the choice of whether the job is a good fit or meets the needs that you have. Remember this as you interview or get offers. Make sure a potential job will further your goals and meet your current needs or situation as well.
- Try not to get discouraged. It is not likely that you will find your dream job after your first interview. Talk to family and friends and ask them about their first job experiences. You are not alone!
Activities and information to help you search for jobs and prepare for your interviews can be found in the 4-H curriculum, Build Your Future: Choices, Connections, Careers by MSU Extension. More information on career preparation can also be found on the MSU Extension website.
