Grant to support PhD student pursuing sustainability research
The new grant represents a way to pay it forward after Liu won a significant global science prize.
A new endowment for doctoral students seeks to make sustainability scholarship more sustainable.
The Jianguo “Jack” Liu Graduate Award in Sustainability will grant $1,400 to benefit students enrolled in any MSU graduate program to help address global sustainability challenges and opportunities, particularly telecoupling, metacoupling, and coupled human and natural systems.
Liu, the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability and director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, is paying forward after being awarded The Gunnerus Award in Sustainability Science in 2021 by the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
“I was deeply honored to receive this international award, and it only makes sense to continue to support the work of our next generation of sustainability scientists,” Liu said.
Applicants must be doctoral students in good standing who have completed their coursework, dissertation proposals, and comprehensive examinations. They must be actively working on their dissertation projects. Preference will be given to those applicants who will complete their dissertations within one to two years of receiving the award.
