Landscape architecture student looks to make a difference through environmental design

Undergraduate Anhad Viswanath is inspired by creating outdoor settings that enable people to engage with their natural surroundings.

Landscape architecture blends different disciplines, and that’s what attracted Anhad Viswanath to the program at Michigan State University (MSU). Viswanath is interested in applying research and data to complex urban planning challenges, and is interested in a career that will pursue greater inclusivity in the built environment as well as protect the natural environment.

“Since childhood, I have been an avid creator through design and art. I found that landscape architecture allows me to apply that to make a difference to the lives of many,” Viswanath said. “Moreover, the field is sensitive to sustainability and aims to practice good stewardship.”

Outside of academics, Viswanath is active in the MSU Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Mixed MSU, a student organization for those that come from multi-cultural, multi-racial, and/or multi-ethnic backgrounds, and Her Campus MSU, an online student publication for women.

Viswanath is one of the 2021 CANR Alumni Association Scholarship awardees.

Why did you choose your major and why MSU?

I chose MSU because it is a land-grant university and that makes it a great one for my major, landscape architecture. I chose landscape architecture because it is a dynamic major and field where there are many opportunities through design that blend with art, ecology and society.

Landscape architecture involves the design of outdoor spaces, such as our university campus, that introduces an outdoor setting to activities and helping others to engage with the natural surroundings around them.

What has been one of your best experiences within your major so far?

The best experiences within my major so far have been participating in design projects in class and attending American Society of Landscape Architects club meetings.

What do you want others to know about this major?

I would want one to explore how landscape architecture is so relevant in creating outdoor spaces into interesting places that can interact well with the natural surroundings and thereby enhance the ecosystem.

What are some of the best things about being an MSU student?

Some of the best things about being an MSU student include having access to many opportunities on campus and services, such as the Neighborhood Engagement Centers, that help one with their goals and staying well.

Any thoughts or advice for current or new students?

For current and new students, I would encourage them to explore campus and make the most out of as many opportunities they can during their time at MSU. I would also encourage them to interact with their professors and advisors and reach out to them when they need help and have questions.

What are your future plans?

I plan to apply for the master of environmental design dual degree program offered by the School of Planning, Design and Construction.
