Madison Marsh, a senior majoring in Environmental Economics and Management (EEM) turned her passion for cooking into a rewarding venture. Today, she is a published author with her very own cookbook, The Cut, that has sold more than 400 copies in its first year.
Entrepreneurial spirit has animated Marsh for as long as she can remember. During the pandemic, she found a way to express that spirit through food. She began developing recipes for meals ranging from breakfast to dessert. It first, this was a fun way to share her love for cooking with friends and family. But after many requests for her to make a cookbook, she launched her own business with The Cut cookbook in November 2021. 
Marsh competed in the 2022 MSU Burgess New Venture Challenge, winning $3,000 in funding for her business. She also received the James Ian Grey Scholarship for Entrepreneurial Studies. She has continued to grow her business through multiple pitch competitions to secure more funding, build a social media presence, and develop a new line of vegan sauces.
“My favorite thing about cooking is that it brings people together,” Marsh says. “Sometimes, I feel like our world can be really isolated, but I think food is something that can tie us all together. That is what I valued in creating The Cut. I wanted to make recipes that people would want to share with others.”
Marsh was drawn to Michigan State University from an early age. Her desire to study both environmental sustainability and business management led her to the EEM major in the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics (AFRE).
“I knew after reading the description of the program that AFRE was the path to begin with,” Marsh said. “It sounded really interesting and I knew I could use the classes to benefit my career and focus on integrating sustainability in the business world.”
In April 2023, Marsh was honored with the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in EEM. At the same time, she leads students who share her passion, as President of Women in Entrepreneurship at MSU.
Always the entrepreneur, she plans to move to Denver after graduation and work for a consumer-packaged goods startup company.
