May is National Bike Safety Month
Bicycling: A family activity.
May is National Bike Safety Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year more than 500,000 people in the U.S. are treated in the emergency room and more than 700 people die as a result of bicycle related injuries. In 2010, according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two percent of all traffic fatalities during that year were pedalcyclists. In that same year, of the 52,000 pedal cyclists injured, 18 percent were age 14 and younger. What a preventable circumstance.
Bicycling is an excellent form of physical activity, but there are necessary precautions for the cyclist’s safety. The NHTSA says that bicycle helmet laws have proven effective in increasing helmet use, but it is important that parents and other adults become good roll models.
Bicycling is one physical activity that can easily become a family activity, not only will the younger family members benefit from the together time, this is also an opportunity for them to learn important safety and life skills. Children and younger adults take their cues from the adults around them. Remember to practice the following, because this is what they can learn:
- Family exercise can be fun.
- Together time is important and can be expressed through physical activity.
- Physical activity is key to health and wellness.
- Exercise is not only done in isolation.
- Keep bicycles and equipment in good repair.
- Always wear a helmet and other safety gear.
- Wear appropriate clothing for cycling.
- Be alert and focused.
- Display a healthy respect for others and traffic around you.
- Use routes and paths appropriate for the age and skill of all the members of the family.
