Michigan State University Extension millage passes in Alcona County

On August 6, voters decided to continue funding MSU Extension services for another four years.

On August 6, Alcona County voters demonstrated their commitment to community development and education by approving a .14 mill request to support Michigan State University Extension (MSU Extension) services for another four years. This funding will sustain vital programs including 4-H youth initiatives throughout the county.

MSU Extension operates through a collaborative funding model involving local, state, and federal governments. Local investment not only secures federal and state contributions but also leverages grant funding, ensuring comprehensive support for Alcona County residents. Through this partnership, community members gain access to MSU's network of experts and statewide programs covering youth development, agriculture, health, nutrition, natural resources, and economic development.

"We are dedicated to being responsible stewards of millage funds that support our services in Alcona County," stated Julie Darnton, MSU Extension district director. "The community has shown its belief in our efforts by voting to continue funding these services for four more years."

With a century-long presence in Alcona County, MSU Extension has significantly impacted the community. 2,441 total Alcona County residents participated in MSU Extension programming in 2023. These workshops empowered participants to enhance family well-being, adopt healthier lifestyles, bolster agricultural sustainability, foster youth leadership skills, and address various community development priorities.

Moreover, MSU Extension's 4-H programs remain instrumental in engaging Alcona County youth, preparing them for future success in academia, career paths, and personal endeavors. In 2023, there were 202 youths enrolled in Alcona County 4-H.
