After a year of listening and learning, Michigan State University Extension, the community outreach arm of the university, has released its newly completed 2024 Strategic Direction Plan.

Guided by extensive input gathered through interviews and listening sessions held across the state last fall, this roadmap reflects MSU Extension’s commitment to tackling Michigan’s most pressing needs with a bold, community-centered approach.

“This work wouldn’t be possible without the insight we gathered from communities, stakeholders, MSU Extension professionals and many others who care deeply about Michigan’s future,” said Quentin Tyler, director of MSU Extension.

“Our vision is truly rooted in the voices of Michiganders, in the voices and ideas of the people we serve, and by sharing this roadmap, we invite everyone to join us in making these aspirations a reality.”

The plan affirms MSU Extension’s core service areas and defines four key programming initiatives of the future:

  • Thriving Michigan Food Systems: Strengthening local agriculture to boost Michigan’s economy and ensure healthier food options for everyone.
  • Strong Michigan Communities: Helping Michigan’s communities become vibrant, welcoming, and resilient places to live.
  • Healthy, Empowered, and Fulfilled Michiganders: Promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being across all ages and demographics.
  • Resilient Michigan and Great Lakes Environments: Working to conserve Michigan’s natural resources and preserve the beauty and health of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

To help bring this vision to reality, MSU Extension has outlined four internal operational objectives to increase organizational efficacy:

  • Effective Storytelling and Service Marketing: Amplifying awareness of MSU Extension’s resources and services.
  • Innovative Transdisciplinary Programming: Bridging disciplines and fields to deliver creative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Attracting and Retaining Top Talent: Building and retaining a team of passionate professionals committed to Michigan’s future.
  • Streamlined Systems and Support Solutions: Enhancing internal processes to better serve Michigan communities.

Overall, the report sets a clear vision for how MSU Extension can support Michigan’s people, land, and communities in the years to come.

“We see this plan as more than a vision,” said Tyler. “It’s a commitment to the people who make Michigan extraordinary. As we move forward, we are ready to engage with communities, partners, and everyone who shares our goal of creating positive, lasting change for this state.”
