MSU’s Holly Madill named National Charrette Institute director
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Holly Madill was named director of the National Charrette Institute (NCI) at Michigan State University (MSU). Her appointment was effective Nov. 1, 2017.
Madill, formerly served as outreach specialist at the Land Policy Institute and the Planning & Zoning Center where she worked on research and outreach projects related to land use, placemaking and strategic growth.
“After participating in the selection process, I am excited about the future potential of NCI in its partnership with the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC). Holly Madill will be an excellent permanent director for NCI at MSU,” said Professor Ming-Han Li, incoming director of the School of Planning, Design and Construction.
Over the course of the last 20 years, Madill has developed a diverse set of skills, while coordinating and leading projects around a wide range of topics for the private, nonprofit, institutional and public sectors.
She specializes in community engagement, placemaking, transportation and walkability, as well as development of trainings, surveys (including analysis) and proposals. Madill is also a graduate of the NCI Charrette System and NCI Charrette Management and Facilitation certificate programs.
"I am excited to be leading the National Charrette Institute and look forward to continuing the legacy of high-quality products and projects. I’ll be looking for ways to not only integrate NCI and charrette processes into the School of Planning, Design and Construction and MSU Extension, but also across campus, and into new areas and markets,” Madill said.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from Michigan State University.
Madill succeeds Bill Lennertz, who stepped down in January and is still a lead trainer for NCI. Wayne Beyea, a senior specialist with MSU Extension and a faculty member with SPDC, served as interim director from January through October.
The National Charrette Institute is dedicated to transforming the way people work together by building capacity for collaboration. They have trained thousands of public and private planners, and designers and community activists with their NCI Charrette System certificate program.
The NCI has worked directly with communities on projects across the country, helping them change the way they work together.
