—The Forest Carbon and Climate Program Team

A note from the Director

Dear members of the FCCP community,

Many of you may have heard about the significant ice storm that occurred late March in northern Michigan resulting in significant damage to power infrastructure and forest ecosystems. Moments like these are a good reminder that increasing severity of extreme weather events can have dramatic impacts on both forests and the communities that rely upon forests. This also highlights an opportunity to remind us that sustainable forest management incorporating climate change considerations can serve as a viable solution to climate induced challenges.

We’re excited to ramp up our summer activities with lots of exciting things planned including landowner workshops across the eastern US to increase access and remove barriers to voluntary carbon markets through resource sharing and knowledge transfer. We’ll be launching a new series of learning modules titled “Carbon Stewardship of National Forests and Grasslands” in collaboration with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. A team of researchers will head to Colombia to implement a co-designed research approach involving stakeholders to inform new carbon mitigation standards and engagement strategies as apart of the Augmenting Climate Transition across the Atlantic Transect of which FCCP is a member of a diverse team of researchers and practitioners across four countries.

Happy end of the semester to those in school or teaching and enjoy the wonderful nature and weather that summer often brings.

All my best,

Chad
