Cheyenne Sloan is from Oxford, Michigan and is a Horticulture B.S. Degree student.  She proudly serves as the president of the Student Horticulture Association. We asked Cheyenne a few questions about herself.

Why did you choose horticulture as your major/degree?

I chose horticulture because I liked how applied the program is, I love apples, and I want to become an extension educator.

What has been the best experience in your major so far?

That would be a toss-up between all of the cool research I’ve been a part of and Student Horticulture Association.

I’ve worked in several different labs in the department and they have given me invaluable experience and tons of networking opportunities. I’ve met researchers from all over the world and have gotten to work with some of the brightest minds in horticulture. Plus, in my current lab I get to eat apples all the time!

This year I’m the president of Student Horticulture Association and I’ve been a member for the entirety of my time here at MSU. I love this organization because we get hands on horticulture experience, compete in the national collegiate landscaping competition, and I have made so many amazing friends through it. Plus, I get to share my enthusiasm with other plant-loving people!

What is the best selling point about your major that you would like others to know?

Honestly, the people! All of my professors and peers are absolutely amazing and so passionate about what they are teaching/studying. Plus, there are small class sizes which leads to lots of interaction with the professors and allows me to get to know my classmates very well (being able to eat or keep what you grow in lab is pretty cool too).

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to attend grad school to obtain my PhD in horticulture and conduct research on either orchard floor or high-density orchard management. After that, I want to become an extension educator so that I can help farmers and educate people on the importance of agriculture.
