Schools and Communities have three locations to choose from to learn how to start their outdoor gardens this spring.
Michigan State University Extension is hosting School Gardening 101 Workshops around Southeast Michigan in May. Teachers, food service directors, parents and other volunteers can come and find out all of the essentials to growing a successful school garden. These same workshop topics will work for community and faith-based gardens as well.
Katherine Hale, MSU Extension educator, said, "We have been asked by educators to provide more educational opportunities in local communities to help train school and community garden teams."
"Participants will learn how to choose the best site for their garden, how to improve their soil, selecting the best vegetable crops that will mature in spring or fall when school is in session, how to conduct regular garden maintenance, how to incorporate the garden into school curriculum and much more," stated Kristine Hahn, MSU Extension educator.
Sessions will be taught by MSU Extension educators and master gardeners.
Identical workshops will be held in Oakland County at the MSU Tollgate Education Center on May 3, Wayne County MSU Extension office on May 10 and a third workshop will be held at the Macomb County MSUE conference room on May 14. Participants can choose which session they attend. The workshop is $20 and will run from 5-8 p.m. at each site.
