Suillus luteus, “The Slippery Jack”, is the type species for Suillus. This mycorrhizal mushroom is found under conifers and is an early colonizer. Tolerant of low pH soils and low nutrient availability, S. luteus, increases theais considered a choice edible, though you may not think so after handling it. S. luteus has a slimy layer on the outside of the cap and looks shiny when dry. Speckles and a partial veil are present on the stipe.
