Sustainability Speaker Series: Paving the path to a greener future

Michigan State University Extension's Sustainability Speaker Series emerges as a guiding light for those navigating the intricate web of sustainable practices. This engaging lunch-and-learn format highlights several key themes, offering fresh insights and practical strategies for fostering a more sustainable future.

On September 10, 2024, Adonai Garcia, M.S., tech team manager at York University, will kick off the series with a session on the concept of zero waste. This presentation will explore how redesigning resource life cycles can minimize landfill use and reduce environmental impact, emphasizing the importance of eliminating waste at the source.

Continuing on October 8, 2024, Claire Mahler, the owner of 86 Plastic in Troy, Michigan, will present on the topic of "Refilleries: Reducing Your Waste Footprint." Claire will discuss how refilleries promote a sustainable lifestyle by reducing single-use packaging waste and encouraging the reuse of containers, thereby lessening the overall waste footprint.

On November 12, 2024, Roger Cargill, founder of Finite Phoenix, will delve into waste management. This session will cover the processes of collecting, transporting, processing, recycling, and disposing of waste materials to minimize their impact on the environment and human health. Roger will share insights on how effective waste management can lead to healthier communities and ecosystems.

The series will conclude on December 10, 2024, with Dan Broersma, sustainability manager for the City of Holland, Michigan. Dan will discuss sustainability initiatives in Holland, MI, focusing on the development and execution of community-focused environmental sustainability initiatives. This session will highlight the role of local governments and communities in driving sustainable change.
