EmailUsing his B.S. degree in Horticulture, Tim has traveled around the world collecting tree seeds and enjoys managing the Arboretum's collection of trees and shrubs.
Tim Boland is Executive Director of The Polly Hill Arboretum located on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. This historic arboretum includes 20 acres under cultivation and 40 acres of native woodland.
Why did you choose Horticulture and why MSU?
My older sister went to MSU and I would visit her and marvel at the beautiful trees on the campus arboretum. MSU has one of the most beautiful campuses in the US. The department, like today, has an outstanding reputation.
Where did you go after MSU?
I did two internships, one at the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, and one at the Royal Horticulture Society (England). I eventually would work at MSU for tens years as Nursery Manager.
Describe your current work. What keeps you engaged in your work?
I love trees and I enjoy managing an Arboretum (a collection of trees and shrubs) from around the world. I have traveled to Japan and throughout the US collecting tree seed and growing it for our visitors.
What advice can you give current or potential students?
Be sure to meet with your advisor – they are invaluable for advice and also will help you with career opportunities. Be open to new experiences and ideas. Take advantage of internships in your chosen field of horticulture. Enjoy the many gardens on campus, but also travel to see other gardens, gather new ideas. Plants are powerful! They are absolutely essential to our welfare. When you work in this field, you are contributing to healthier and more beautiful planet!
