USDA federal order for mandatory report of PEDv
New cases of PEDv or PDCoV, must be reported to State Animal Health Officials (MDARD) and USDA as a requirement of these diseases being placed on the reportable animal disease list.
On June 5, 2014 USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack issued a federal order requiring pork producers to report on instances of Swine Enteric Corona Virus Diseases (SECD) in their herd. SECD includes both PEDv and Porcine Delta Coronavirus (PDCov). New cases of PEDv or PDCoV, must be reported to State Animal Health Officials (MDARD) and USDA as a requirement of these diseases being placed on the reportable animal disease list. As cases are confirmed by diagnostic labs via positive PCR samples the reports will also be sent the state veterinarian office. Cases are considered confirmed positive if there is a positive PCR test and clinical signs of illness in the herd. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) urge producers to immediately notify the state veterinarian’s office if they receive a positive diagnostic sample. Herds confirmed with PEDv infections will be required to complete a health management plan through their veterinarian or a government veterinarian. The USDA and MDARD are also remaining focused on protecting producer privacy as the reporting requirements are implemented.
