CRFS at W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s 2014 Food & Community Gathering
CRFS staff presented and participated in panels at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's 2014 Food & Community Gathering: Harvesting Change, held last month in Detroit.
CRFS staff, affiliates and partners were among the nearly 600 food system leaders that convened in Detroit last month for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's 2014 Food & Community Gathering: Harvesting Change. They joined colleagues of all ages from across the country in discussions, tours, and workshops around issues of food sovereignty, equitable food access and opportunities to address health inequities for vulnerable children.
CRFS Director Mike Hamm, Senior Associate Director Rich Pirog and Specialists Colleen Matts and Adam Montri were featured along with CRFS partners and friends in the opening welcome video, "Taking Root in Michigan: The Good Food Movement," which highlighted WKKF-supported efforts in Detroit and across the state.
Hamm later offered personal reflections and commentary on a panel discussion, "The Good Food Movement as Social Change," and Matts and Specialist Julia Smith shared learnings from their Michigan Farm to School activities in on- and off-site sessions.
Harvesting Change also marked the release of "The Local Food Movement: Setting the Stage for Good Food," a CRFS publication and timeline chronicling major food system trends and developments in recent history.
The three-day event featured additional highlights including a performance by the young "Food Warriors" of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, a seed swap facilitated by the national FoodCorps team, and remarks by U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow.
