NWMHRC Honeycrisp Berm Trial
Project goal: To determine if berming trees at planting increases tree vigor and establishment of high density apple plantings.
Project description: A few growers in northwest Michigan have tried berming new apple plantings to increase vigor and growth in sandy soils during the first few years of establishment. This project will compare tree growth and establishment of Honeycrisp on two rootstocks, berm versus no-berm trees.
Project lead/collaborators: Nikki Rothwell and Todd Einhorn
Funding sources: Michigan Tree Fruit Commission’s new planting funds
Start year: 2019
End year: 2029
