Background

Hubert Hirwa is a Post Doctoral Research Associate at the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, Michigan State University (MSU). Hubert has a background in Ecology, with specialization in dryland ecosystem management and food security. His doctoral work focused on virtual water transfers, water use efficiency, and its implications on dryland food security. He has experience in exploring the socio-agroecological activities for a sustainable agriculture perspective from local to global scale, as well as water-energy-food-biodiversity-health nexus.

Hubert’s research at MSU focuses on quantifying the impacts of multiple shocks on the production and flows of agricultural products across local and regional food systems led by Professor Jianguo “Jack” Liu. Hubert worked with environmental impact assessment (EIA) authorities, consultant companies, and academic institutions. All these efforts come together in my main goal: emerging solutions to mitigate climate change.

His principal research interests are in the area of sustainability, sustainable agriculture, virtual water flows, water use efficiency, precision farming, landscape ecology, food security, water security, energy security, agroecosystem management, environmental impact assessment, natural resource management, ecosystem services, agrarian greenhouse gas emissions, machine learning, GIS and remote sensing technology, climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.
