Biography:

Dr. Shyamal Karmakar is a newly appointed Research Scientist at the Institute of Water Research. He specializes in advanced numerical models for simulating groundwater flow and transport. His research primarily focuses on developing an integrated model for PFAS compounds to predict their pathways, transport, and fate in surface water, groundwater, and their interfaces. He has devised a short-term single-well tracer method for characterizing fractured georeservoirs and contaminant transport. Additionally, he has developed water quality parameter-based indicators to assess changes in land use and land cover. Previously, Dr. Karmakar served as teaching and research faculty member in the Environmental Science program at the University of Chittagong. He has led multiple nationally and internationally funded research projects supported by organizations including ICIMOD, USAID, UNESCO-TWAS, and DAADDr. Karmakar is particularly interested in advancing high-resolution modeling of hydrological processes and watershed dynamics.

General areas of Expertise:

  • Groundwater modeling
  • Contaminant fate and transport modeling
  • Watershed modeling
  • Environmental Assessment and monitoring
