Funds for the 10 Cents a Meal for School Kids & Farms incentive program were appropriated for a 2016-2017 pilot. Administered by the Michigan Department of Education, 16 school districts participated in this pilot program. Initial results show that: 86 farms and 16 other businesses in 28 counties received business through the program; children were served 49 different types of Michigan-grown produce and legumes, including 30 foods new to meal programs; and food service directors indicated that the variety of produce as well as their certainty of planning and purchasing power were all increased.
